Anyone else doesn't want a TV in the living room?

Probably a silly question but in the new house I would like to put TVs in at least two of the three bedrooms instead of having a big TV in the living room.
I hate the mess that comes with slouching on the sofa in front of the TV.
Would this arrangement be the end of watching TV together as a family? Has anyone done it and found it to be ok?

Labootin Thu 11-Jul-13 20:59:31

I think it would be the end tbh

My dc do not have tv's in bedrooms for that reason though tbh now they have mini iPads it's a moot point

You will get the mn stock answer that you should all be playing monopoly (and killing each other when I'll johnnycake lands on Mayfair)

I don't want a TV in the bedrooms or the living room, but I want a massive one in the Kitchen (where there's a small sofa).

Personally, I think the mess issue is a little unusual, but it's horses for courses isn't it!

Labootin Thu 11-Jul-13 21:10:41

We have a tv in the kitchen which is also a dining area .. That's where most of the watching happens

Mind you we also, have a cinema room so,I'm possibly not the best person to,ask...

I'd absolutely hate a TV in any bedroom. The living room is where a family live isn't it?

moondog Thu 11-Jul-13 21:20:07

'hate the mess that comes with slouching on the sofa in front of the TV. '

Eh? What mess is that?
People are at least together as opposed to sealed in their own bedrooms, staring into screens.

MrsBertMacklin Thu 11-Jul-13 21:23:34

...but what would you point all your furniture at grin?

bimbabirba Thu 11-Jul-13 22:01:30

Cinema room?
shock

bimbabirba Thu 11-Jul-13 22:03:07

The one place where I'd hat to have a TV is the kitchen/diner. I hate families who don't talk at the dinner table and instead stare into the TV screen.
Suppose it is horses for courses!

poocatcherchampion Thu 11-Jul-13 22:09:19

What mess?

Bedrooms are a no no for me. Bit too anti social.

We moved house nearly a year ago with DS then aged 9mo. To help him to settle we kept one small room, free of boxes, with his playmat and toys in - and the TV with a comfy chair. We all had this room where we could have some time out from unpacking, tripping over boxes and crap.
This room hadn't changed!
Our living room looks lovely without a tv, we relax on it during the day, read to DS, have a cuddle, play wirh toys etc.
To he honest, we don't watch an awful lot of tv, just the odd series. We are abroad and here they don't show anything until 10.30 (Homeland, Walking Dead, Criminal Minds, films etc) when DS is in bed. If I pop on some cartoons for DS so I can have a shower, I know he's upstairs with me. The tv/playroom is DS's future bedroom, but as we still co sleep, it ain't changing anytime soon!
I prefer one tv in one main room. A small tv. In the corner. Which is what we've got and where it will be next year, or whenever.

<long post dull as arseholes, sorry!>

moondog Thu 11-Jul-13 22:22:50

Not at all! Other people's domestic set ups are fascinating,

ernesttheBavarian Thu 11-Jul-13 22:30:33

I feel the same. In our last house we had a room upstairs that was sort of half office half 2nd sitting room. We put a tv in there and not in the living room as we wanted the living room to be tv free. Not be dominated by tv, not watch tv so much etc. trouble is basically we never sat in our proper living room and were all squished in the tv room every night.

I absolutely would not have one in the bedrooms. We now have tv in our living room and tbh it does bug me a bit. I saw a very nive wall unit that had a sliding door behind which you could hide the tv when not in use. I though it was a perfect solution so at least the tv wasn't constantly in your face it HDTV vetoed it

ernesttheBavarian Thu 11-Jul-13 22:32:19

That last bit was but dh vetoed it. But the tv took over

I haven't replaced the TV since we were burgled last summer, so we've been without one in the living room for just over a year. I like it. I never watch TV anyway cos I'm always too busy on MN. It has changed DS2's habits too, and means he hardly ever watches TV either... which is great, partly because he does more other things like chatting, drawing, practicing his guitar... And partly because he watches films back-to-back when he's at his dad's, and I feel that's enough. DS1 was already hiding up in his room most of the time anyway, so having no TV downstairs hasn't affected him much.

The other change I notice is that the boys used to hassle me to watch TV in front of the TV fairly often... Now it's gone, we almost always sit down at the table for a meal, and I like that too. smile

flow4 Thu 11-Jul-13 22:48:10

"the boys used to hassle me to watch TV in front of the TV" ?!?! confused
I meant eat tea in front of the TV!

elQuintoConyo Thu 11-Jul-13 23:07:59

Do I smell a faint whiff of sarcasm, moondog ? grin

I'm one of those tedious people who doesn't watch much tv, too busy with DS and housework and coffee with friends I will take remove my brain and leave it with the squeezed-out teabags and pop on Love it or List it, or one of those American shows where people bid for storage units that are in arrears - love that one!

mrsyattering Thu 11-Jul-13 23:11:04

wish I had a family room to house the tv, and keep my living room nice. have a small one on kitchen... none in the bedrooms I hate tvs in bedrooms

moondog Thu 11-Jul-13 23:20:36

No not at all although can appreciate your suspicion as of dies sound sarky! I'm not much of a tv watcher although I spend waaaaah too much time glued to a computer screen.
I hated the corner unit and dusty wires behind it so as we are in the middle of a lot of work in the house, I got the builders to walk mount it. Thanks to advice of a. MNer I learnt you cZn gave it with nk boxes of trailing wires if you only have freeviw. It is sk lovely and uncluttered and I got a carpenter to make a wooden frame to go around it sk j can't see the back at all.

elQuintoConyo Thu 11-Jul-13 23:31:24

smile

That does sound lovely. Where we are going to house ours there will also be wires from: dvd player, telephone, modem... can't wait!

chickydoo Thu 11-Jul-13 23:41:07

No TV in our Sitting room, chairs & sofas face an open fire.
No TV's in bedrooms....anti social.
We do however have a playroom & have the TV in there with Xbox for kids. Second TV in the study for whoever wants to watch it.
I'm not one for TV, maybe watch an hour or two maximum every week, some weeks I don't watch anything.
